Mines of Spain State Recreation Area:

Begin your hiking escapade at the Mines of Spain, where history and nature intertwine seamlessly. Traverse through lush forests and rolling hills as you uncover remnants of the region’s rich lead mining heritage. Indecently, the Horseshoe Bluff trail is our favorite, with views of the Mississippi River and a walk through a limestone canyon. Located across the River in Dubuque, IA, this trail sits on the land given initially to Julian Dubuque by the King of Spain.

Mississippi Palisades State Park:

Experience the awe-inspiring beauty of the Mississippi River bluffs at Mississippi Palisades State Park. This park is located south of Galena, near Savannah, IL. Meander along rugged cliffs, winding through dense woodlands adorned with vibrant foliage. Be sure to catch glimpses of the majestic eagles soaring overhead. If you don’t mind rocky terrain, try the Sunset Trail, and don’t miss the scenic overlook.
