Grant’s Home Front Civil War Reenactment

Visit Galena this April and experience history firsthand at the 2025 Grant’s Home Front Civil War Reenactment and Encampment, April 26-27, 2025. This popular, annual event offers a unique and family-friendly opportunity to “witness” the Civil War’s Siege of Vicksburg and Battle of Fever River.

The study of history is all too often imagined as a dull and dusty endeavor best left to book-loving academics. In fact, the tale of history is all around us, not just between the covers of some musty tome. All you need is for someone bring to it life for you, like they do each year at Grant’s Home Front Reenactment.

Galena, IL is rich with history. Not only were famous Civil War battles fought here but Ulysses S. Grant once called Galena his home – and that’s not all! Galena is home to a variety of museums and historic homes.  Fascinating attractions such as the U.S. Grant Home, The Old Market House, Apple River Fort, the Old Blacksmith Shop, and the Elihu B. Washburne House.

For maximum exposure, however, nothing beats the annual Civil War Reenactment and Encampment, held the last weekend of April, every year. Attendees can expect a chance to witness realistic Civil War battles and engage with living history actors portraying military personnel and civilians of the era. You can even attend a 1860’s-era ladies’ bazaar and purchase beautiful handmade items.

As a final incentive, know that our Galena bed and breakfast, Hawk Valley Retreat and Cottages, is just minutes from all the fun in downtown. Enjoy stepping back in time to the 1860’s, knowing that the modern comforts of your room at Hawk Valley Retreat are just a short drive away. Perfect!
